Early spring styling

Early spring styling

As soon as the weather starts changing, it can only mean one thing… wardrobe changes. Being a nearly 30 year old going through a slight identify crisis in the clothing department, an ASOS shopping spree was definitely called for. After all, what kind of crisis doesn’t call for a glass of wine and PJ’s?

Outfit one

Skirt – ASOS DESIGN striped mini skirt with bask hem £25

Top – ASOS DESIGN button through linen cami £16

Shoes – River Island cross over mule with ring detail in black £38

My initial thought when I saw this skirt was, that’s not very current me but it’s cute and I want it to work. Turns out it cuts at the most unflattering point on my legs and just really doesn’t do me any favours. The top on the other hand is a lovely little top that has a bit more interest than your standard cami, perfect for summer and potentially for layering up until it gets warm enough for flashing so much skin.

Outfit two

Top – ASOS DESIGN sleeveless sun top with button deal £14

Skirt – JDY button through linen midi skirt £25

Shoes – as before

I feel like a middle aged hippy wannabe who has been given uniform restrictions of linen and neutral colours and has gone with the safest option. The little button details on the top caught my eye originally, but this top is just too stiff and shapeless. The skirt has pockets which is a good redeeming feature but other than that I don’t really think it does anything for me.

Outfit three

Top – ASOS DESIGN cropped t-shirt with embroidered palm £12

Shorts – ASOS DESIGN gingham mom short £22

Shoes – River Island sliders with floral detail in green £22.50 sale price (£45 full price)

Pinterest browsing had shown me many cute outfits that were basically shorts and a t-shirt. Those women looked incredible and effortless. I look like I’m 8 years old again. These are the kind of shorts that really aren’t made for an adult woman. There’s not enough hip room despite the waist being a bit on the big side which leads to that really unfortunate crotch bulge. Not ideal.

Outfit four

Top – ASOS DESIGN button through top in broderie £28

Shorts – Miss Selfridge shorts with paperbag waist in pink £28

Shoes – as before

I wanted this to be cute, but even in my imagination I had trouble picturing it. The top does nothing for me at all, maybe in a thinner more drapey fabric this shape could work, but not as it is. The shorts on the other hand might be my new favourite sunshine item. They feel super soft, they fit well, and you could definitely fill your boots at a BBQ and still be comfortable.

Outfit five

Top – Brave Soul swoop top in bird print £9 sale price (£30 full price)

Shorts – Bershka mom short in blue £17.99

Shoes – as before

This is another childhood inspired outfit. Not a fan. The shorts are great (especially for the price) but combined with this top they really aren’t giving that effortless grown up look I was hoping for.

Outfit six

Top – Missguided t-shirt with face print in white £12

Shorts – Pimkie shorts with tie waist in stripe print £14.99

Shoes – as before

This outfit screams pyjamas. Not always a look I hate, but I’m not convinced by this version. I love a line drawing which first attracted me to the top, the quality is shocking though. After wearing it for a couple of hours I noticed a hole in the front where nothing had rubbed or caught it. ASOS do their own line of graphic tees with line designs on them with in my experience are much better quality.

Outfit seven

Skirt – ASOS DESIGN button through midi pinafore skirt abstract print £25

Shoes – as before

After being so disappointed by everything else I had tried on, this pinafore was the perfect next try on. I love it. It feels comfortable and the pattern is perfect for me, something a little bit different but not too in your face. Outside the box but clinging right to the side comes to mind but that’s absolutely fine with me. I’m not so confident with how well this is going to wash and stay black and quite how to style it with something more than a bra, but let’s just ignore any negatives for now.

Outfit eight

Skirt – ASOS DESIGN twist front midi pinafore skirt in stripe £35

Shoes – as before

Wow. This left me a little bit speechless and not in a good way. I was really excited for this pinafore to arrive, it was the pinafore that ignited my new found love for the style, on the screen that is. The twist gives me a belly where there isn’t quite so much of a pot thank you very much. The length isn’t great on me and there is barely any give at the hem line so walking isn’t the most convenient. The whole top section just looks like a dress that has been pulled down mid party and I’m trying (and failing) to style it out. Huge thumbs down from me.

Outfit nine

Dress – ASOS DESIGN maxi slubby cami swing dress with faux wood buttons £22

Shoes – as before

This photographs as a bit awkward and not so flattering, but I think that is just me. I really like the way this dress fits but it doesn’t feel like it will be too heavy when the sun finally does show his face. It reminds me a lot of a dress I had when I was younger, it was a hand me down that had probably been through all three sisters before getting to me but it made me feel really special and grown up. This dress has some big boots to fill in the looking great, feeling great game.

Outfit ten

Jumpsuit – ASOS DESIGN cami jumpsuit with gathered bodice detail £28

Shoes – as before

Can you ever really go wrong with a bit of pyjama chic? Not in my world. I think this could do with a bit of a helping hand in the styling department, but the fabric feels lovely and light and the fit is as far from being constrictive as physically possible.

I don’t think I have ever tried on so many outfits and hated so many things. If it wasn’t for the abstract pinafore I think I would have gone into complete wardrobe identity crisis. I need help. Or a good long browse on Pinterest for some more ‘me’ style inspiration.

Stay tuned!

Much love!
